Water Conservation Grant Awarded

On December 8, 2010, the Department of Public Works (DPW) was
awarded a
Department of Environmental Protection water conservation
grant in the
amount of $54,000. This grant will be used to purchase
and install 65
low flow toilets in public buildings. It is estimated that
the low flow
toilets will result in a cumulative water savings of about
688,000
gallons per year. In addition, the grant will pay for the
completion of
a water system audit. The goals of the water audit
are to assess the
amount of unaccounted for water; determine
explanations for the
difference between the amount of water pumped
into the system and the
amount of metered water sold; identification
of sources of lost water
and to make recommendations for overall
system improvements. This
important grant will support the DPW's
continuing efforts to conserve
the City water resources and to use
these water resources efficiently
and wisely.
