Construction Update - Weeks of May 1st

For the weeks of May 1st, weather permitting, the following work is scheduled:

Pleasant Street Improvements Project
  • The City has contracted with JBL Construction Company of Springfield, MA to implement roadway, bicycle and pedestrian improvements on Pleasant Street from Hampton Avenue to Hockanum Road
  • JBL will be installing curbing and drainage between Hockanum Road and Holyoke Street.
Pleasant and Williams Street and Hockanum Road Gas Work
  • Columbia Gas is replacing gas main and services along these routes. Work will continue through the spring and summer.
Day Avenue
  • Caracas Construction will begin mobilizing equipment and material for the reconstruction of Day Avenue. Work includes replacing water, sewer and drain lines, reclaiming the roadway and replacing the sidewalk. Beginning the week of May 8th, Day Avenue will be CLOSED to through traffic. Access for residents will be maintained.  
River Road Retaining Wall
  •  ET&L Corporation is replacing the River Road retaining wall. Beginning October 31st the road will be CLOSED from just north of the driveway entry to Highview to the the bridge near the Williamsburg Town line and a DETOUR will be in place. The project is scheduled to be completed in late May 2017, and the roadway will reopen by June 1st.
Pulaski Park Phase 1
  • Mountain View Landscapes has regraded and replaced sod at the rear of the park, and the area is fenced off. Please respect the fence and stay off the restored area.
Pulaski Park Phase 2
  • Mass-West Construction will continue construction on Phase 2 of Pulaski Park, the Overlook at the rear of the park that will connect it to the Roundhouse Parking lot. The project is anticipated to be completed in the late spring of 2017.
  • The construction area is fenced, and parking spaces in the lot will be reduced for the duration of the project.
  • There is no pedestrian access from the parking lot up the stairs near South Street. Pedestrian access from the parking lot to Main Street is via Crafts Avenue or the stairs behind City Hall.
  • Construction vehicles will be accessing the site through the parking lot. Motorists and pedestrians are advised to be aware of construction activity and use caution when parking and walking in the lot.

Department of Public Works Street Sweeping Operations 2017

The Department of Public Works will be starting their annual street sweeping. We will be sweeping the City Wards in the following order: 1, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2.

We expect that we will start in the last week of April and it will continue until completed in the late summer.

The D.P.W. will be sweeping the school parking lots starting next Tuesday April 18th during spring school vacation. That operation will be completed by Friday April 21st.

We will also be sweeping the Downtown Business District and Florence Center every other week during the sweeping season from 11pm to 7am. The dates will vary and be dependent on the weather.

Construction Update - Weeks of April 17th and 24th

For the weeks of April 17th and 24th, weather permitting, the following work is scheduled:

Pleasant Street Improvements Project
  • The City has contracted with JBL Construction Company of Springfield, MA to implement roadway, bicycle and pedestrian improvements on Pleasant Street from Hampton Avenue to Hockanum Road
  • The project will begin at Hockanum Road with the removal of sidewalk and curbing and the installation of drainage and new curbing.
Pleasant and Williams Street and Hockanum Road Gas Work
  • Columbia Gas is replacing gas main and services along these routes. Work will continue through the spring and summer.
River Road Retaining Wall
  •  ET&L Corporation is replacing the River Road retaining wall. Temporary Lane Closure on Market, Hatfield, & Bright Streets

The Department of Public Works will be closing one travel lane on Market, Hatfield, & Bright Streets between 7am at 11am on April 13, 2017.

The lane closures will be staggered and for the purpose of repairing roadway trench cuts.. The roads will have one lane open at all times during this project, and police details will be present.

Motorists are advised to seek alternate routes if possible, and please be prepared for traffic delays. Motorists are advised to approach this work zone with caution.
