Pothole Update
  • This week the DPW crews repaired potholes on Spring Street and Holyoke Street.  They also worked on sewer cuts. Street sweeping efforts are focused in Ward 3.

Hinckley Street
  • Ludlow Construction may be working on Hinckley Street this week, continuing to finish up the project. 
  • This work includes reconfiguring a concrete step, loam & seed, and miscellaneous clean-up. 
  • Police Officers will be on duty to facilitate traffic flow, if necessary. 
Chesterfield Road at Kennedy Road - Upper Roberts Meadow Reservoir Dam
  • SumCo Eco-Contracting, LLC has removed the dam and completed the in-water work. Restoration of the access roads and staging area will be undertaken during October and November. 
  • The project will remove the Upper Roberts Reservoir Dam to restore the Roberts Meadow Brook stream channel to its natural course. 
Chesterfield Road
  • Palmer Paving will be finishing up the project by hydroseeding and line-painting 
  • Detours may be in place around the construction zones from Chesterfield Rd and Spring St through Dimock St and possibly Reservoir Rd, Main Street Leeds and Spring Street. 
  • The project includes replacement of the water line, drainage improvements and reconstruction of the roadway. 
Downtown Paving
  • The project commenced in August and includes Pleasant Street, Hampton Avenue, Wright Avenue, Cooke Avenue and Fulton Avenue Downtown Paving Project. The Contractor for this project is Warner Bros., LLC of Sunderland MA. Emergency vehicle access and one-way traffic will be maintained, but there may be short duration road closures during certain phases. There will be traffic delays. Please seek alternate routes if possible. 
  • Week of October 22 through October 26 
Monday (10/22) – Paving on Pleasant Street and Hampton Avenue
Tuesday (10/23) – Paving on Pleasant Street, Wright Avenue, and Fulton Avenue
Wednesday (10/24) – Paving on Cooke Avenue and North King Street Sidewalk and driveway work on Hampton Avenue
Thursday (10/25) – Sidewalk and driveway work on Hampton Avenue Driveway work on Pleasant Street
Friday (10/26) – Sidewalk work on Hampton Avenue Driveway work on Wright Avenue and Fulton Avenue
  • The contractor proposes to pave one lane of Pleasant Street on Monday and the other lane on Tuesday. In the event of rain, paving on Pleasant Street may be shifted to October 24th. Parking will be prohibited on Pleasant Street from 6AM to 4PM on these days. During the paving operation (both days), traffic on Pleasant Street will be allowed to travel only in the northbound direction between Hockanum Road and Main Street. Southbound traffic will be detoured to the Conz Street roundabout. 
Nonotuck Street
  • Nonotuck speed humps have been milled and will be replaced with speed humps of a slightly different geometry as part of the downtown paving project.

Orchard Street Closure Oct 13 - 7 AM to 1 PM

Orchard Street will be closed to thru traffic on Saturday October 13th, 2018 between the hours of 7AM to 1 PM for the planting of 17 trees in the tree belt.

Emergency vehicles and residents will have access from either end of Orchard Street for the duration of the closure.

  • Pedestrian and bicyclist use of the bridge will be allowed except during periods of active inspection.

  • Monday October 1st and Tuesday October 2nd. The City’s paving contractor, Warner Brothers LLC, will mill (remove the top layer of pavement) on Pleasant Street (between Main Street & Hockanum Road), Cooke Avenue (between Bridge Road & Hatfield Street) and North King Street (between Coles Meadow Road & Laurel Park). There will be no parking on these streets between 7AM and 4PM on these days. Police officers will be on duty to direct traffic. The Contractor will maintain at least one lane of traffic but delays are anticipated. Commuters are encouraged to seek alternate routes. 
  • Other work. The Contractor will continue working on Hampton and Wright Avenues resetting street structures (i.e. manholes, catch basins, valve boxes, etc.) and installing new curb. Selected areas for work will be marked for “No Parking”. Police officers will be on duty to direct traffic. The Contractor will maintain at least one lane of traffic but delays are anticipated. Commuters are encouraged to seek alternate routes.

Downtown Paving Alert - Pleasant Street


Downtown Paving – Alert for Pleasant Street

Monday October 1st and Tuesday October 2nd.  The City’s paving contractor, Warner Brothers LLC, plans to cold plane (remove the top layer of pavement) on Pleasant Street from Main Street to Hockanum Road.   There will be no parking on Pleasant Street between 7AM and 4PM on these days.  Police officers will be on duty to direct traffic.   The Contractor will maintain at least one lane of traffic but delays are anticipated.   Commuters are encouraged to seek alternate routes.  

Additional pavement cold planing will be conducted on October 1st or 2nd at the following locations:
  •      Cooke Ave (from Bridge Road to North Hatfield Street)
  •     North King Street (two patches between Coles Meadow road and Laurel Park)
After October 2nd.  The City’s paving contractor will continue working on street structures; i.e. manholes, catch basins, valve boxes, etc.   Parking will resume on Pleasant Street except at locations where the contractor has planned work for the day; restricted areas will be marked.  Police officers will be on duty to direct traffic.   The Contractor will maintain at least one lane of traffic but delays are anticipated.   Commuters are encouraged to seek alternate routes.

The work may also include drainage repairs on Wright Ave and Fulton Ave. Traffic on these streets may be restricted to one lane at times, expect some delays. 
  • The project includes re-paving of Hampton Avenue, Wright Avenue, Cooke Avenue, Fulton Avenue and Pleasant Street (from Main Street to Hockanum Road).

  • This week the DPW crews have finished street sweeping Ward 6 and are currently working in Ward 5. No potholes were repaired due to inclement weather. 
Hinckley Street
  • Ludlow Construction will be working on Hinckley Street this week, continuing to finish up the project. 
  • This work includes line-painting, constructing two short retaining walls, installing concrete steps, miscellaneous clean-up, and loam and seed. 
  • Police Officers will be on duty to facilitate traffic flow. 
Chesterfield Road at Kennedy Road - Upper Roberts Meadow Reservoir Dam
  • SumCo Eco-Contracting, LLC plans to remove the last remnants of the base of the dam this week. 
  • Roberts Meadow Brook stream channel will be restored to its natural course. 
  • A pedestrian access pathway is being installed to the left abutment of the former dam.

Friday (9/14) – Finish grading of subgrade in preparation for paving the following week

North Main Street
  • On Tuesday, a line painting subcontractor for Columbia gas will be striping recently paved, short sections of North Main Street.
Hinckley Street
  • Ludlow Construction will not be working on Hinckley Street this week. They shall return mid-September to finish up a few Punch List items.
Chesterfield Road at Kennedy Road - Upper Roberts Meadow Reservoir Dam
  • SumCo Eco-Contracting, LLC has removed the dam and will be on site to begin removing the in stream access road and restoring the channel. 
  • The project will remove the Upper Roberts Reservoir Dam to restore the Roberts Meadow Brook stream channel to its natural course. 
Audubon Road
  • Borges Construction will be on site to finish punch list items and touch up restored areas with loam and seed. The project will be complete after this week.

  • Palmer Paving will be excavating soil and placing gravel along the road edges on Chesterfield Road. 
  • Detours will be in place around the construction zones from Chesterfield Rd and Spring St through Dimock St and possibly Reservoir Rd, Main Street Leeds and Spring Street.

The roadways to be repaved in the downtown area this construction season are Pleasant Street (between Main Street and Hockanum Road), Hampton Avenue (entire length), Wright Avenue (entire length) and Fulton Avenue (entire length). The Contractor for this project is Warner Bros., LLC of Sunderland. One-way traffic will be maintained, but there may be short duration road closures during certain phases. There will be traffic delays. Please seek alternate routes if possible.

  • N.E.L. Corporation will be painting metal components that have been exposed by member replacements. Additional parts are being fabricated for the remaining structural work. Anticipated project completion is in October. Actual reopening of the bridge will depend on MassDOT approval of the completed work. 
  • Pedestrian and bicyclist use of the bridge will be allowed except during active construction.

Hatfield street traffic northbound from Bridge Road to Cooke Avenue will be closed to traffic from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on August 28, 2018. The City of Northampton DPW will be completing a tree removal. There will be a traffic detail, and motorists are advised to seek an alternate route.

  • Ludlow Construction will be working along the full length of Hinckley Street this week in their efforts to complete the project soon. 
  • The work includes finish paving of sidewalks, driveways, and other incidental items. 
Chesterfield Road at Kennedy Road - Upper Roberts Meadow Reservoir Dam
  • SumCo Eco-Contracting, LLC will be on site to remove the remaining 10 vertical feet of the dam and to monitor sediment movement. 
  • The project will remove the Upper Roberts Reservoir Dam to restore the Roberts Meadow Brook stream channel to its natural course. 
Audubon Road
  • Borges Construction will be on site to finfish punch list items and touch up restored areas with loam and seed. The project will be complete after this week. 
Chesterfield Road -
  •  Palmer Paving, through their subcontractor C and A, will continue installing water services on Chesterfield Road

  • Ludlow Construction will be working along the full length of Hinckley Street this week.
  • Starting Wednesday, August 22nd, 2018, Final Paving will occur from South Main Street to Riverside Drive, including work at the intersections of South Main Street, Nonotuck Street, Winslow Avenue, Warner Street and Riverside Drive. THERE WILL BE NO PARKING ALLOWED ON HINCKLEY STREET OR NEAR THE INTERSECTIONS MENTIONED ABOVE, AND VEHICLES WILL BE TOWED.
  • Please park outside of the posted NO PARKING WORK ZONE. Traffic Police will be on site to keep vehicles out of the work area. If you are a Resident of Hinckley Street, please move your vehicle outside of the work zone by 7:00 AM on Wednesday, August 22, and Thursday, August 23 as necessary.
  • Other work includes finish paving of sidewalks, driveways, and other incidental locations.
Chesterfield Road at Kennedy Road - Upper Roberts Meadow Reservoir Dam

  • SumCo Eco-Contracting, LLC has removed approximately 20 vertical feet of the dam with approximately 10 vertical feet remaining to be removed. Additional removal of the dam will not occur until after rain events mobilize sufficient sediment in the impoundment downstream. SumCo will be on site to monitor sediment movement weekly and after rain events but has otherwise demobilized from the site.
  • The project will remove the Upper Roberts Reservoir Dam to restore the Roberts Meadow Brook stream channel to its natural course.

Temporary Closure of Northampton Bikeway August 14, 2018

Tuesday, August 14, 2018 the Department of Public Works will be working on the King Street Brook and the sedimentation basin located at the end of the Northampton Bikeway by Stoddard and State Streets at the rear of Stop and Shop.

Bikeway users should take notice that the Bikeway will be closed to all bike and pedestrian traffic  between Adare Place and Stoddard Street.

Please be advised that there will be heavy equipment traveling up and down the Bikeway at the closure location.  For their own safety, all users of the Bikeway will be turned back at the closure locations.  Police details will be present.

  • The project includes replacement of the water line, drainage improvements and reconstruction of the roadway.

·         This week the DPW crews cleaned catch basins in the city to prevent street flooding.  Clean up efforts were underway because of tree damage caused by the storms.  Next week the crews will continue street sweeping efforts in Ward 7 and potholes repairs will be prioritized.

Concrete trucks will continuously be entering and leaving the site at the signalized crosswalk entrance to Smith. Trucks will be coming up Conz Street from Exit 18, turning onto New South Street and staging at the old horse arena at the corner of West and Earle Streets before being called to the site for delivery. Motorists should anticipate DELAYS and, if possible, SEEK ALTERNATE ROUTES.  
Pleasant Street
  • Columbia Gas will be installing new gas main and services on Pleasant Street between Main Street and Kirkland Avenue. Motorists should EXPECT DELAYS and seek alternate routes if possible. The work is anticipated to take several months to complete.

For the week of July 2, 2018 Weather Permitting

Pothole Update - 
  • This week the DPW crews repaired the potholes on Overlook Drive, Brookside Drive, Round Hill Road, Henshaw Avenue, Strawberry Hill, Kimball Street, Howe Street.  They are in the process of working on potholes on Sheffield Lane and others throughout the city.  The largest potholes are being filled first to alleviate hazards to motor vehicles.  As hazards arise and are identified they will be addressed.

Hinckley Street 
  • Ludlow Construction will not be working this week.  They will return on Monday, July 9th , to work on installation of curbing, and raising of utility structures.   Driveway and sidewalk construction may also begin that week.
  • New sidewalk, a raised crosswalk in Nonotuck Street and final paving are upcoming this summer.
Main Street Florence
  • Paving of the milled roadway section in front of the new Cumberland Farms is scheduled to occur on Monday, July 2nd. One way traffic will be maintained, but motorists should EXPECT DELAYS and seek alternate routes, if possible. 
Chesterfield Road at Kennedy Road - Upper Roberts Meadow Reservoir Dam
  • SumCo Eco-Contracting, LLC has removed slightly less than one half of the dam. They have demobilized form the site until rain events mobilize some of the sediment in the impoundment downstream.
  • The project will remove the Upper Roberts Reservoir Dam to restore the Roberts Meadow Brook stream channel to its natural course.
Chesterfield Road
  • Palmer Paving is scheduled to be working this week.
  • The project includes replacement of the water line, drainage improvements and reconstruction of the roadway.
Pleasant Street
  • Columbia Gas will be installing new gas main on Pleasant Street between Main Street and Kirkland Avenue. Motorists should EXPECT DELAYS and seek alternate routes if possible. The work is anticipated to take several months to complete.
Clement Street Bridge
  • Repair work for the Clement Street Bridge has been awarded to N.E.L. Corporation. Project submittals are currently under review. Anticipated project completion and bridge re-opening is late summer 2018.
  • Pedestrian and bicyclist use of the bridge will be allowed except during active construction which is anticipated to begin the week of July 9th.

  • This week the DPW crews repaired the potholes on Grove Street, Island Road, Brookside Circle, Overlook Drive, High Meadow, and Rural Lane.  They are in the process of working on potholes on Acrebrook Drive and Cross Street.  The largest potholes are being filled first to alleviate hazards to motor vehicles.  As hazards arise and are identified they will be addressed.

Hinckley Street 
  • Ludlow Construction will continue with roadway reconstruction this week on Hinckley Street.  DRIVEWAY ACCESS WILL BE LIMITED DURING WORK HOURS, plan to move your vehicle(s) out of your driveway prior to 7:00 AM. This work entails raising covers for manholes & catchbasins, excavation, soil removal, backfilling, placement and grading of gravel.  The ban on parking along Hinckley Street will continue
  • Weather permitting, Monday will include work along Riverside Drive as well as Hinckley Street.  On Wednesday and Thursday, the binder (first) course of pavement will be installed on Hinckley Street. This will be followed by work on sidewalks, curbs, and driveways in following weeks.  
  • Horizontal alignment stakes have been installed along properties at Hinckley Street. 
  • Traffic on Hinckley Street will be restricted and detours may be in place.  Public Safety officer(s) will be on duty.
  • The work of replacement of water and sewer utilities is complete.  New sidewalk, repaving, and a raised crosswalk in Nonotuck Street is upcoming this summer.
