Construction for the week of April 1, weather permitting:

Highway Division Update

  • Last week, Public Works repaired potholes on Main Street Arch Street, Mulberry Street, Florence Street, and Reservoir Road in Leeds. They also worked to repair potholes on Old Ferry Road, Nonotuck Street, Cross Street, Bliss Street, Hancock Street, Williams Street, Hatfield Street, Cooke Avenue, North Farms Road, North Maple Street, Spting Grove Cemetery, Clement Street Bridge, Hatfield Street, Cooke Avenue, Crescent Street, Ryan Road, Burts Pit Road and Loudville Road. To report a pothole, please submit a request for Pothole Repair.  The largest potholes are filled first to alleviate hazards to vehicles.
  • As hazards arise and are identified, they will be addressed.
  • Street sweeping was done on Elm Street, West Street, New South Street, Main Street, Bridge Street and Locust Street.

Burts Pit Road Paving Project

  • Emergency road excavation for culvert improvements on Burts Pit Road will require a road closure between Rural Lane and Woods Road from 7 AM to 5 PM on Friday, March 29 and Saturday, March 30.  Access will be maintained to local houses and emergency departments have been notified.  There will be a Police detail on site during these hours. Travel during off hours will be allowed, but use of the detour is recommended as the road will not be in finished condition.
  • The City has contracted with Palmer Paving for pavement reclamation on Burts Pit Road from Clement Street to Forest Glen Road. The project primarily involves paving with some drainage improvements between Florence Road and Clement Street and in the vicinity of Deerfield Drive, Rural Lane, and Woods Road. The overall schedule is from March 25 to August 15. Emergency vehicle access and one-way traffic will be maintained, but there will be several days of road closures between Clement Street and Florence Road between 7am and 2pm. There will be traffic delays. Please seek alternate routes if possible.
  • For the week of April 1: The contractor will be marking out the project, installing erosion and sedimentation controls, installing construction signs, and installing tree protection.

Burts Pit Road Sliplining Project

  • The City has contracted with Aqua Line Utility to "slipline" two culverts that convey streams under the road, which involves inserting new pipes into the existing culverts to repair them.
  • There are two locations, a twin culvert near #947 Burts Pit Road and a culvert near #1021 Burts Pit Road.
  • The project will begin on February 25. The duration of the project is expected to be one month.
  • The contractor will require lane closures during construction, and there will be traffic police to allow one-way traffic at all times.

Bridge Road at Cooke Avenue

  • The City has contracted with Dagle Electric Corporation to upgrade the traffic signal and controls at the intersection of Bridge Road, Cooke Avenue and Jackson Street.
  • Dagle will be on site Tuesday-Thursday wiring and programming the new traffic control cabinet. The existing signals will continue to operate normally until the new signals are placed in service.
  • Temporary stoppage of traffic may be required during certain operations. Motorists should use caution in the work zone and obey police details directing traffic.

Bridge Street near Bridge Street School

  • Dagle Electric Corporation will be installing school zone flashing beacons near Bridge Street School on Monday.

Chesterfield Road at Kennedy Road - Upper Roberts Meadow Reservoir Dam

  • SumCo Eco-Contracting, LLC has removed the dam and completed the in-water work. Initial restoration of the staging area is complete and final restoration of the staging area and access roads will be completed in the spring of 2019. 
  • The project has removed the Upper Roberts Reservoir Dam and restored the Roberts Meadow Brook stream channel to its natural course. 

South Street Bridge at Mill River Diversion Channel

  • The City has contracted with Northern Tree Service to perform vegetation removal and maintenance work on portions of the flood control system.  
  • The bridge on South Street near Earle Street that crosses the Mill River diversion channel includes flood control structures. Trees adjacent to the flood control structures have been removed with stump removal expected in the spring.

Downtown Paving - Pleasant, Hampton, Wright and Fulton

  • The project commenced in August and includes Pleasant Street, Hampton Avenue, Wright Avenue, Cooke Avenue and Fulton Avenue. The contractor for this project is Warner Bros., LLC of Sunderland, MA.
  • Work is complete for the winter season. Remaining punch-list work will be completed in the spring of 2019.
  • Warner Bros will be working on site restoration and various punch list items. 
  • Line painting is scheduled for Wednesday, (April 3) on various streets. On street parking will not be allowed during during this work. Motorists should expect delays and seek alternate routes if possible. (to be rescheduled for next week due to the weather.  More information to follow)

  • Snow removal work was done along Westhampton Road.

  • The contractor will require lane closures during construction, and there will be traffic police to allow one-way traffic at all times.

Tree Removal

  • The City of Northampton has contracted with Northern Tree to remove approximately 50 dead red pine hazard trees at the corner of Reservoir Rd and Chesterfield Rd. This work will begin next week on Monday (3/18), and will likely continue for 3-4 days. Because a crane will be used to remove the trees, traffic may be impacted. Police details have been scheduled for these days.

  • The City has contracted with Dagle Electric Corporation to replace the traffic signal and controls at the intersection of Bridge Road, Cooke Avenue and Jackson Street.

  • Snow removal work was done in the following areas:  Reed Street, Charles Street, Sanderson Road, Fairway Circle, Blackberry Lane, Prospect Avenue, Revell Avenue, Olive Street, East Street, Fort Street, Manhan Street, Columbus Street, Lyman Road, Conz Street, Wright Avenue, Fruit Street, Earl Street, Maple Ridge Road, Florence Road, Old Wilson Road, Calvin Terrace, Norfolk Street, Jackson Street, Pinebrooke Curve, Rick Drive and downtown Northampton.

Burts Pit Road Closure 3/6/19


Please be advised that Burts Pit Road will be closed to thru-traffic between Cardinal Way and Florence Road on Wednesday, March 6, 2019 from 1 PM- 5 PM for culvert repairs.  Detours will be in place and police will be on site.  Emergency departments have been notified.  Access will be maintained for residents.
